Traits we measure - Measure what really matters

Traits we measure - Measure what really matters

The field of psychology has been measuring personality and cognitive traits for decades, using tools like personality surveys and cognitive aptitude tests. But the catch is that these tests rely on the test-taker accurately reporting responses to subjective questions like “Do you waste your time?” or "Are you a great problem solver?”

At Unberry, we’ve built a new form of scientific assessment that could finally enable reliable strengths identification in hiring, able to measure most job-relevant traits in just a few minutes — without asking a single subjective survey question. At the core, we measure multiple traits across four major buckets -

🧠 Cognitive profile: How they process information & knowledge mentally.
💡 Intelligence profile: How they isolate and navigate complex problems.
🤔 Thinking profile: How they learn concepts & organize their thoughts.
🧘 Behavioural profile: How they control and conduct themselves.

Understanding these different dimensions of their thinking & learning styles, as well as their ability to handle stress during unforeseen situations, helps us reliably predict their success at a particular job.

Ambiguity Tolerance :  Honing your ability to thrive within ambiguous circumstances is vital. The ability to navigate projects without explicit direction is an indispensable strength. It helps you adapt to ever-changing situations, make quicker decisions and tackle criticism and setbacks better. In fact, studies show that people with high ambiguity tolerance tend to have higher job satisfaction, better mental health, and greater emotional intelligence.

Learning Agility : Being an Agile learner is the best way to “future-proof” your career. Learning agility is our ability to learn, adapt, unlearn, and relearn to keep up with constantly changing conditions. Agile learners seek out new challenges, ask for feedback from others to learn and grow, and are reflective. In a nutshell, learning agility is a set of complex skills that enable us to learn something new in one place and then apply what we learned elsewhere, in a wholly different situation.

Fluid Intelligence : "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change“ - Einstein's Fluid intelligence can be understood as your essential analytical capacity - your raw processing power. It is the general ability to think abstractly, reason, identify new patterns, and solve problems, independent of prior knowledge, education, or experience. People with high fluid intelligence are what we call “street smart”, and are better placed in complex problem-solving projects that require on-the-spot thinking.

Sustained Attention : People who do the majority of their work on computers are distracted once every ten and a half minutes on average. The simple act of paying attention can take you a long way. Sustained Attention is the ability to focus on something for long periods of time without being distracted. In other words, we concentrate on time-consuming work giving our undivided attention to it. “Deep Work” is becoming a competitive advantage for companies. Paying undivided attention helps in interpreting information more effectively, prioritizing goals, and avoiding irrelevant stimuli.

Working Memory : Working memory is essentially your mental bandwidth. Think of it like a temporary sticky note within the brain, that helps you carry out complex cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, and comprehension, without losing track of what you’re doing. People with exceptional working memory can stay focused on a task, block out distractions, learn new concepts and make quick decisions to solve complex problems in real-time. Thus, understanding this important facet of the mind is essential for anyone who wants to perform better in the workplace.

Resilience : Resilience is the ability of people to 'spring back' in the face of adversity. It’s like the mental reservoir of strength that helps people handle stress and hardships. In today’s workplace, resilience has become a key trait required for peak performance. Resilient employees view challenges as lessons they can use to build their skills and reduce their mistakes helping them recognize that workplace challenges serve as opportunities for growth. They are able to calmly and rationally look at a challenge and envision a successful solution.
